"Ollo, I mean, hello. I'm Robin Ami Banner. I'm a thirty-three-year-old PNW local and I'm all about cannabis, cosplay, and video games. My favorite TV show is The Incredible Hulk (1978-1982) and my favorite movie is RoboCop (1987). I have a four-year-old special needs shelter cat (Natasha Romanov) and a nine-year-old special needs adoptee cat (Miss Lily), both of whom I love so. I am divorced since December 2019 and have been living the single, disabled life ever since. Forgive my shortcomings, I'm working hard to better myself. Not looking for a life partner, found one in a fictional character."

"You be good to yourself, be safe."

DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER

What is this rare, fascinating condition?

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously called Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), is a disorder recognized by the DSM-5 and characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states, usually as a reaction to trauma, to help a person avoid bad memories. Each identity may have a unique name, personal history, and features. These identities sometimes include differences in voice, gender, mannerisms and even such physical qualities as the need for eyeglasses. There also are differences in how familiar each identity is with the others.

Symptoms and signs of dissociative disorders, including DID, depend on the type and severity, but may include:• Feeling disconnected from yourself• Problems with handling intense emotions, such as fear, anger, excitement, etc• Sudden and unexpected shifts in mood – for example, feeling very sad or angry for no apparent reason• Depression, anxiety problems, or both• Feeling as though the world is distorted or not real, such as the belief life is a simulation, or a dream (called ‘derealisation’)• Memory problems that aren’t linked to physical injury or medical conditions• Other cognitive (thought-related) problems such as concentration problems• Significant memory lapses such as forgetting important personal information or past events you were involved in• Feeling compelled to behave in a certain way, this is commonly seen in friend groups• Identity confusion – for example, behaving in a way that the person would normally find out of character

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. "What causes DID?"

A. Let's take a quick mental health lesson. When we are born, our whole personality is fragmented, unpolished, and only through growth and interaction does it comes together as a whole, between the ages of six and nine. This is when a child's real sense of self and their place in this world begin to form.DID manifests in some young individuals when a single traumatic event, or a prolonged traumatic situation, causes the brain, through great denial, to essentially split itself, creating a second separate, conscious being, an alter, to either take your place or to hold traumatic memory from you, to protect you.

Q. "Is there a cure?"

A. The short answer is no. The long answer is complicated. People with DID, to find any semblance of serenity, must uncover the demons of the past in therapy and work towards moving forward in life, despite the bad things that have happened.Through therapy and personal work, the events that sparked an alter to appear can be properly processed and allow the alters involved to feel more at peace. If the alter is open to it, the alter will become one with the rest of the system, feelings, memories, and such, in an event called reintegration. While reintegration is often suggested by mental health professionals, it is not always a feasible option, or even a desired one.

Q. "Are alters like they are in the movie Split?"

A. Haha, that movie. The movie Split is actually a very sore spot for many DID systems as our struggles were used as plot material for a movie that didn't pay enough respect to its source material. While alters may claim to have supernatural origins and such, their reality is trauma-based and they, more often than not, cannot confirm the facts to back up their claims. There is some truth to the movie though. There's a scene in the movie where one alter speaks about how he needs insulin whereas other alters do not. This is a grey area in DID as it has been medically observed that some systems can dissociate away from physical medical issues, but it's not absolute, they have no control over it, and once said alter comes back, so do the medical issues.

Q. "How can I tell if I have DID?"

A. I have actually been asked this a few times. It's getting to be a more common a question as humans become more familiar with trauma and its affects on the brain. I am NOT a medical professional and cannot diagnose anyone, but I can give you a push in the right direction.Get yourself a notebook or a notepad app on your phone, tablet, or computer. Find some time to yourself where you feel comfortable and won't be interrupted by others and ask yourself, out loud, "Hello? Is anybody in there?" Pay careful attention to any thoughts that come up, any responses, any feelings, memories, and jot down everything you can, even if it seems insignificant. Feel free to make drawings of things you see or feel.Take these scribblings to a licensed therapist who specializes in dissociative disorders and they will be able to help you put the pieces together and professionally determine a diagnosis, if they believe you to have it.

COSPLAY BY UIDB

On the cosplay scene since 2008, UIDB MGMT has donned over thirty different cosplays and with future cosplays planned, there’s no sign of stopping.Starting from birth, UIDB has always had a taste for the theatrics, quoting all their favorite lines and donning all manner of outfits and costumes from the dress-up box. It's no wonder they dove into cosplay head first and never looked back.Famous cosplays include Italy from Hetalia and Fluttershy from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Favorite cosplays include, but are not limited to, Rasper the Fox, Kylo Ren from Star Wars, and Erik from Phantom of the Opera.

“Cosplay really sugars my tide pods. It’s great fun and a challenge to fade away from the shackles of reality and to become someone entirely new and different. Male, female, other, human, or not; I love to do it all.”

Below are some of the many cosplays we have donned over the years.
